No matter how conscientious you are about your oral care, at some point in your life you will probably experience toothache. This usually indicates a problem with the teeth or gums so the best thing you can do is make an appointment as soon as possible so we can find out why you are experiencing pain.
Possible causes
Toothache can be severe and debilitating, and there are several possible causes. Dental decay is a possible explanation and this can usually be resolved quickly and simply with a filling. Alternatively you may be experiencing sensitivity. While you are waiting for a dental appointment, try using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth to ease the symptoms.
Another common cause of toothache is a dental abscess in the gum or the tooth socket. This is often accompanied by swelling next to the tooth and loosening of the tooth itself. We may recommend a course of antibiotics alongside dental treatment.
Pain in the tooth itself is usually more acute and may keep you awake at night. Initially the tooth may be sensitive to extremes of temperature, before developing into a more continuous dull ache.
This type of pain usually indicates that the tooth has died and the only way to preserve the tooth is through root canal treatment. If we are to save the tooth it is important that you receive treatment as soon as possible.
To alleviate toothache in the short term we recommend painkillers and anti-inflammatories, but these are only designed for temporary relief and will not resolve the underlying issue.
Whatever the type and severity of your tooth pain, it is best to call your dentist and make an appointment. For your peace of mind and to restore your dental health a conclusive diagnosis and professional treatment is the best course of action.
